Best Meme Coin to Buy in 2026

As per our research, the best meme coin to buy in 2026 is Dogecoin. It is the largest, the most heavily traded, and the easiest to sell again. Five others that also rank well on the same tests of size, daily volume, and spot listings on exchanges are: Shiba Inu, Pump.fun, Pepe, Pudgy Penguins, and Bonk.

Meme coins were worth about $135bn at the November 2024 peak. On 16 October 2026, they are worth $29.9bn; close to four-fifths of the money that was in this market has gone.

This guide ranks the six on figures you can check yourself, shows how far each one stays below its own high, and three coins we left out. If you are new to these tokens, check out our guide to meme coins, which explains how they work.

Key Takeaways

  • Sector size: Meme coins are worth about $29.9bn, down roughly 78% from a peak of $135bn in November 2024.
  • Dogecoin still dominates: DOGE alone is $12.8bn of that total, about 43% of the whole sector.
  • Most listed coins have not recovered: 81% of 150 exchange-listed meme coins trade at least 90% below their highs, according to a Talos study.
  • One token earns fees: Pump.fun takes a cut of every launch on its platform and spends part of it buying back and burning supply.
  • Governance is an attack surface: An attacker spent about $4m on voting power in July 2026 and took roughly $20m from Bonk’s treasury, without breaking any code.

The Meme Coin Market Going Into Late 2026

Meme coins peaked at $135.06bn in November 2024, according to CryptoRank. By mid-June 2026, the sector was worth $24.48bn. It has since recovered to $29.85bn on 16 October, as per CoinGecko’s meme token data. A brief rally had carried it back to about $47bn in January before it gave that up again. The sector is almost 78% below the high.

Bar chart of the meme coin sector market cap, falling from a peak of 135.06 billion dollars in November 2024 to 47 billion in January 2026 and 29.85 billion on 16 October 2026

The damage is not spread evenly. Dogecoin accounts for roughly 43% of what is left, so the sector total is one large coin plus a long tail of much smaller ones.

Talos examined 150 meme coins listed on central exchanges and found 81% trading at least 90% below their all-time highs, as reported by CryptoSlate. Talos also noted that limiting the sample to exchange-listed tokens counts only the survivors, so the failure rate across all launches is higher than that.

Token creation has gone the other way. Solana minted a record 263,000 tokens in a single day on 9 September 2026, against 40,000 to 50,000 a day at the December 2024 peak. More coins are being created than ever, chasing a pool of money that has shrunk by nearly four-fifths.

Derek Lim, Head of Research at the market-making firm Caladan, told Decrypt in January 2026 that he would “hesitate to read this as the market shifting into a more risk-on mode”. He was hedging during a rally. That rally has since faded, and at $29.9bn the sector sits well below the $47bn it was worth when he said it.

How We Picked These Six

We ranked meme coins on what can be checked on a public page. Each coin had to meet all of the following:

  • A market cap above $250m on 16 October 2026
  • Spot listings on at least two of Coinbase, Binance, and Kraken
  • At least 12 months of trading history
  • A supply and holder picture we could verify on-chain
  • Daily volume large enough to sell a normal position without moving the price

The last test carries most of the work. A coin can show a billion-dollar market cap and still have almost nothing on the other side of the order book, and the valuation stops meaning anything at the moment you try to sell.

The Best Meme Coins to Buy in 2026

1. Dogecoin (DOGE)

Best for: Size and depth of market.

At $12.84bn, Dogecoin is worth more than the other five on this list combined, and accounts for about 43% of the whole sector. It trades at $0.0821, which is 88.9% below the $0.7376 it reached in May 2021. It launched in December 2013 and runs on its own blockchain.

Its order books are deeper than anything else here by a wide margin, and it is the only coin in this group that most mainstream brokerages carry.

The risk: Permanent inflation. About 5bn coins arrive every year whether or not anyone wants them, so the price needs constant new buying to hold its level.

2. Shiba Inu (SHIB)

Best for: Exposure to the second-largest meme coin brand.

Almost 589 trillion SHIB are in circulation. This number explains the price, which is $0.000005142, or 94.2% below its October 2021 high. The market cap is $3.03bn.

Shiba Inu arrived in August 2020 as an Ethereum token and has since added a layer-2 network, Shibarium, alongside a swap and an NFT arm.

The risk: Its supply is a problem. Around 589 trillion tokens circulate, and the burn programme removes a fraction of a percent a year. The side projects have not changed how the price behaves.

3. Pump.fun (PUMP)

Best for: The only coin here with a business attached.

Pump.fun is the token of the Solana launchpad where much of the new meme coin supply is created. Its July 2025 sale raised about $600m in 12 minutes, one of the largest token sales on record.

DefiLlama data puts 30-day platform fees at about $184m, with part of the net revenue spent buying back and burning PUMP. The company says a single burn in April 2026 removed nearly 36% of the circulating supply.

The token trades at $0.004522 for a market cap of $2.10bn, and is 62.8% below its July 2025 high. This is the shallowest fall here, though it is measured against a high set 15 months ago instead of the multi-year peaks the others are judged on.

The risk: The revenue comes from a single activity and rises and falls with it. Launchpad volume rotates, and a rival, Fomo, out-earned Pump.fun on 7 September 2026. A securities class action, Aguilar v. Baton Corporation, is also unresolved in the Southern District of New York.

4. Pepe (PEPE)

Best for: Buyers who want a large meme coin and nothing else bolted on.

Pepe came to Ethereum in April 2023 with no presale, no transaction tax, and a renounced contract, and it has not attempted a product. The price is $0.000004127, giving a market cap of $1.74bn, 85.4% below its December 2024 high.

The risk: The fair-launch claim is disputed. Bubblemaps alleges that about 30% of the initial supply was under one entity at launch, and that the same cluster sold $2m of PEPE the day after. The project’s own site describes a stealth launch with no allocations.

5. Pudgy Penguins (PENGU)

Best for: Exposure to a meme brand with a real consumer business.

Pudgy Penguins toys have been on Walmart shelves since 2023, with later tie-ins including Pez and Care Bears. The brand began as an NFT collection in August 2021 and is the only name here attached to a trading consumer business.

PENGU, its token, trades at $0.007717 for a market cap of $485m, 86.6% below its December 2024 high.

The risk: The brand’s success does not reach the token. Toy revenue goes to the company that holds the intellectual property. There is no revenue share, buyback, or burn, so PENGU tracks sentiment about a business it has no claim on.

6. Bonk (BONK)

Best for: Solana exposure with the widest retail availability.

Bonk arrived on Christmas Day 2022, airdropping half its supply to Solana users at the bottom of the post-FTX slump, with no venture allocation. At $0.0000031, it carries a market cap of $273m, which is 94.8% below the $0.00005916 it reached in November 2024. This is the deepest fall on this list.

The risk: CoinDesk reported in July 2026 that an attacker spent about $4m acquiring voting power, passed a malicious proposal, and took around $20m from the BonkDAO treasury. No code was broken, which makes this a question about how the DAO votes rather than how it is coded. Check what has changed in those rules before you buy.

Three Coins We Left Out, and Why

MemeCore (M): It would rank fourth by market cap at $1.82bn, and we left it out on liquidity. CoinGecko shows about $1.2m of daily volume against that valuation, a ratio of roughly one to 1,500. Pump.fun turns over more than $100m a day on a similar market cap. It also fails our listings test: it trades on Gate, Bitget and MEXC, with no Coinbase listing and no full Binance spot pair. The on-chain investigator ZachXBT has alleged since April 2026 that insiders hold over 90% of the supply, and reported finding no single transfer above $50,000 on BNB Chain across a two-week stretch. He has said he lacks definitive proof, and MemeCore has not publicly answered. We could not identify a single named founder or executive. At that liquidity, the quoted market cap is not a price anyone could sell at.

Official Trump (TRUMP): It clears our size test at $530m and fails on supply. The price is $1.88. Of 1bn tokens, 800m were retained by two Trump-owned entities on a multi-year release schedule, and at that price the undistributed portion is worth around $1.5bn, close to three times the token’s entire market cap. A New York Times analysis in July 2026 found that about 990,000 buyers lost $3.81bn between them, with two in three losing money. The Financial Times has reported that the sale terms bar buyers from joining class actions.

New meme coins launched: New tokens have no trading history, listings, or holder record to read, and Solana alone minted hundreds of thousands of them in a single day in September 2026. Check out our guide to meme coin risks, which covers rug pulls, honeypots, and liquidity traps, before you try new meme coins anyway.

What our team checks before a coin goes on this list

PipPenguin’s research team reviews this page each quarter. Selection is covered above. These are the four things that get a coin taken off it:

• Volume thins out: Daily volume falling below 1% of market cap for a sustained period. This is what removed several names that were on earlier versions of this page.

• Withdrawals stop: A delisting, or a venue that keeps the pair live while suspending withdrawals. Bonk was delisted by Upbit, which we watch without it changing the ranking.

• Holdings concentrate: We read the top of the holder list on a block explorer. Concentration alone does not remove a coin, but a top ten that is quietly growing does.

• The story stops matching the chain: Announcements, partnerships, or burn claims we cannot confirm against on-chain data.

Where to Buy Meme Coins

All six trade on Coinbase, Binance, and Kraken, which between them cover most countries. Dogecoin and Bonk are also on Robinhood.

Factor in three things to decide where you should buy:

  • Check that the exchange serves your country and accepts your currency for deposits and withdrawals.
  • Check the spread and the withdrawal fee on the specific coin, since a cheap fee on an illiquid pair costs more than it saves.
  • Check what you can move off the venue, because a coin you cannot withdraw is one you do not fully control.

Readers in India should settle the tax position before trading, since crypto gains are taxed at a flat rate with a deduction at source on each transaction. Our guide to crypto tax in India sets out how it works.

If you plan to hold for longer than a few weeks, move the coins off the exchange. Our comparison of hot and cold wallets explains what you give up either way.

How Much to Put In

Position size matters more than coin selection in a market where the median outcome is a near-total loss. Three rules our team applies:

Decide the amount before you choose the coin: Pick a figure you can lose in full without changing any plan you have, then allocate inside it.

Size against liquidity, not market cap: If your position is worth more than a few percent of a coin’s daily volume, you become part of the price when you sell.

Plan the exit before you buy: Set a price and a date that would make you sell. Every coin above has fallen more than 60% from its high, and most people who held through that had nothing written down.

Best Meme Coin to Buy in 2026: The Bottom Line

Dogecoin scores highest on everything this page can measure, and it is still 88.9% below a high it set five years ago. Pump.fun is the only one with revenue behind it, and the only one facing a securities class action. The other four have no earnings or claim on anything, so their prices move on attention alone.

None of this makes any of them a sound holding. The sector is worth less than a quarter of what it was two years ago while producing more tokens than at any point in its history. Whatever you decide, check these figures against a live source first, because every one of them shifts daily.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best meme coin to buy right now?

Dogecoin scores highest on all the possible verifications. It is the largest at $12.84bn, has the deepest order books, and is listed on Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, and Robinhood, which makes it the easiest to sell again at a fair price. But these are just liquidity measures, not a forecast of returns.

Which meme coin is best for the long term?

None of them is built for it. Meme coins have no earnings or cash flow, so there is nothing to compound over time. Pump.fun comes closest because platform fees give it something underneath the price, but even there the revenue rests on a single activity.

Is it too late to buy meme coins in 2026?

Prices are far below where they were two years ago, which tells you about the past rather than the future. The sector fell to $24.5bn in June 2026 and has recovered to $29.9bn since, so it is neither at its low nor anywhere near its high.

What is the best meme coin to buy in India?

The same six, bought through an exchange that serves Indian residents and accepts rupee deposits. The larger question is the tax treatment rather than the coin, so read our guide to crypto tax in India and work out your net position before you trade.

Can meme coins reach their old highs again?

The arithmetic is steep. Dogecoin would need to rise about nine times to revisit $0.7376, and Bonk about 19 times to reach $0.00005916. Moves of that size have happened in this market before, and each would require the sector to grow several times over.

How much should I put into a meme coin?

Put only the amount you can afford to lose. The sizing rules above set out how to work that out against a coin’s daily volume, and why volume matters more than market cap when you come to sell.
